Generated Names
Use Random when you want broader tone variety across all races.
Elf and Tiefling tend to produce the most stylized names.
Town mode is useful for region maps, tavern ledgers, and rumor tables.
Advanced settings help you match a campaign region by title, format, or first letter.

Join PatreonD&D Name Generator by Race
Our free D&D name generator creates character names for every 5e race. Choose a race above or use Random for variety.
D&D Elf Names
Elf names tend to be flowing and melodic. Use the Elf option to generate names like those of Legolas, Galadriel, or Elrond, suited for high elves, wood elves, and drow.
D&D Human Names
Human names in D&D are diverse and cultural. Generate human character names for any campaign setting, from medieval-inspired to cosmopolitan.
Tiefling Name Generator
Tiefling names often have an infernal or dramatic quality. Use this option for characters with fiendish heritage, whether they embrace or reject it.
D&D Dwarf Names
Dwarf names draw from Norse and Germanic traditions, strong, stout, and memorable. Perfect for mountain-dwelling clans and forge masters.
Halfling Name Generator
Halfling names are warm, homey, and often a little whimsical — first names that sound friendly at a dinner table and family names that reference food, comfort, or the land. Use the Halfling option for characters from close-knit villages and traveling caravans.
Dragonborn Name Generator
Dragonborn names carry weight and formality, with hard consonants and clan names that come before personal honor. Generate names fit for proud lineages, temple guardians, and battle-tested champions.
Half-Orc Names
Half-orc names are short, blunt, and punchy — names that sound like they were earned. Use the Half-Orc option for mercenaries, pit fighters, and characters caught between two worlds.
D&D Town Name Generator
Need names for settlements, villages, or cities? Use the Town option to generate location names for your campaign world. For richer worldbuilding — full city names with districts, regions, and tone options — try our Fantasy City Name Generator.
D&D Name Generator FAQ
How does the D&D name generator work?▼
Pick a race (or leave it on Random), choose how many names you want, and hit Generate. Advanced settings let you filter by first letter, switch between full names or first/last only, and add a title prefix like Lady or Captain. Every batch is saved locally so you can revisit recent rolls.
What makes a good D&D character name?▼
A good D&D name is easy for the table to say out loud, fits your character’s race and culture, and leaves room for a nickname. If the party will shorten it anyway, pick something where the short version still sounds right — "Fen" from "Fenwick Thistledown" works; a name nobody can pronounce gets replaced by "the wizard" within two sessions.
Can I use this as an NPC name generator?▼
Yes — that’s one of its most common uses. Generate 10-20 names before a session, switch the output style to "Name + epithet" or "Table-ready prompt," and you have an instant NPC roster with hooks. The Town option names settlements; for full cities and regions, try our Fantasy City Name Generator.
Are these official D&D names?▼
No — the generator creates original fantasy names styled to fit each 5e race’s naming conventions. They’re free to use in any campaign, homebrew setting, stream, or published adventure, with no attribution required.
Does it work for other TTRPGs like Pathfinder or Daggerheart?▼
Absolutely. The names are system-agnostic fantasy names, so they fit Pathfinder 2e, Daggerheart, Shadowdark, or any fantasy setting. If you’re building a Daggerheart character, pair it with our free Daggerheart Character Creator to roll ancestry, class, and domains too.
